Wake Me Up When September Ends

Durfee artistry from Joseph Fontinha's class

Well, it's the last school day in the month of September.  We made it through that first month back with our kids, and it was a great one.  Some amazing planning happened that resulted in some amazing student work.  At all levels, we are singing, performing, and making art- kids are engaged in the work, and good things are happening. Congrats to you all for conducting your "symphony" in your classroom every day.

In the News This Week:

  • The PD Day- Yes, we will meet on Monday from 1:30-3:30 across K-12.  Please see details from last week's blog if you missed it.  I will add the groups to TeachPoint so you can get your PDPs as well.  Look for these in TeachPoint:
    • PreK Art/Music Mapping
    • K-8 Music- Initiate, Create, Activate: practical solutions for making culturally diverse music education a reality
    • Chorus- Vertical Alignment
    • Art- TAB Teaching- Vertical Alignment
    • Art- Arts are LIT- Literacy in Art
    • Art- Culturally Relevant Planning
    • K-12 Band and Orchestra- Culturally Relevant Repertoire
  • Next week, middle school PLC will be used to complete progress reporting, and communicating with parents.  High school PLC will have us diving back into Identity Work on our Canva.
  • Part of my goal work this year will be to bring to you "Student Voice."  I am committing to sitting down with our students at all levels to gain insight from them as to the impact of our work on them- how art making, music making, performing has impacted them.  Every other week, I will share a short podcast with you where I sit down with students and hear from them.  It's really great to hear how much your work means to them, and closes the "circle" of learning for me.  From working with you to plan, to seeing you implement those plans, to looking at the student work, and then finally hearing from the students how the collective experience has impacted them.
    • This week, the PODCAST showcases Abigail Carreiro and the Chorus at Durfee.  Give it a listen- she's an amazing young lady.
Part of my learning this year- digging into Lusophone culture at the Whaling Museum with a lecture and performance from Manuel Costa- Pico native.  Did you know that whales were hunted there until the mid- 1980's?

Have a great weekend!
