Term 2 Underway:
Our 6-12 schools have begun the second term, many of them starting new classes with new rosters.  As we do this, let's remember to get to know IEP and 504 accommodations and/or modifications.  It's a good time to reset with a new group- reflect on what worked and what didn't go exactly as planned.  Semester swaps for Durfee, RPA and Middles will happen later in January, and that will be a great time to do this reflecting as well.
In addition, many schools had or will have their PT conference this week.  Hoping that any parents who you need to meet with have been invited personally so that you can work together with them to boost student achievement, because that is what this night is primarily for.
Supplies- art supplies will be replenished for those who need it for semester 2.  You will receive an email next month that will have the supply list there- you'll be able to make a copy, mark what you need (check your inventory first) and then send that back to me by the deadline.

Adding Criticality to Our Work:
Many of you were together for session 2 with me last week, as we jumped into Identity as a Pursuit in Task Planning.  Part of this work involves reading and analysis of Ghouldy Muhammad's framework for learning- Skills, Arts Intellect, Arts Identity and now, Criticality.  In 6-12 PLC time in the next few weeks, we will read how this impacts planning for relevant learning for our students.  Specifically, Criticality asks: How will students understand the impact of power and/or equity, and specifically the critical purpose of the arts in the world?
Here is an ARTICLE that dives into the concept, and below is a short clip.

More from Chris Emdin:
Many of you have taken time to look at the work of Christopher Emdin, so I wanted to drop an additional thought from his thinking here:
“Ratchetdemic reminds us of the skills and power that our students and teachers walk into the classroom with, how we need to honor those skills and that power, and the responsibility we have to our community. This is a must-read, rooted in demands for justice that our classrooms deserve.”

And for those who didn't get to see this whole interview (30 min), here it is.  Really worth watching.

Accountable Talk:
In PLC we will transition from the pursuit of Identity through arts tasks, and dive into Accountable Academic Talk, to strengthen fluency and language acquisition.  I will share with you sentence stems, and teacher moves to support this work, and we will role play, and plan for a share out after Thanksgiving.

Have a wonderful weekend, team!
