Friday Arts Wrap Up 10/7/16

This week, I am inspired by Mr. MacMullen.  He is the Fearless Band director at Durfee, and this week he ventured out to another district to see and hear how a local district runs their program, from soup to nuts.  He came back with such inspiring ideas, and was so happy to have had the time to do this.  I am inspired by Matt's openness to grow and learn, and his passion for his program.

Collaboration and Growth- This week, we...
  • Collaborated in content teams during the release time day to finalize goals that are meaningful to our craft and to our students' growth.  All drafts are due today on the drive.  Please make sure to share these with me.  I will have the next week to review and give you feedback.  Thank you so much for being reflective in this work!
  • K-5 Music discussed a team goal for 5th grade using their RI Phil program as a vehicle to grow and assess students in music as they begin their new work with the 5th grade through the Orchestra ROCKS program!
  • K-5 Art and 6-8 Art/Music discussed and drafted goals that identify aspects of use of academic language in the arts, and the important work of goal setting as a team toward a collaborative grade level focus.
Collaboration and Growth:
  • Evaluation and Growth- By 10/14, I will have given you feedback on your goals, and at that point you should be planning your action steps toward achieving these, including the assessments you will need to put in place for identification of growth..  These Ed Plan Development Forms will be due on 10/28..  This is your road map!
  • Durfee- You will have your October Faculty Meeting on the 11th, and your Department Meeting on the 19th!
  • All FRPS will have the opportunity to learn together as we use Tuesday, November 8th for full day PD.  Following last year's tradition, I will have an agenda that will include collaborative time with UMASS Dartmouth and BCC as well as outside arts agencies.  Stay tuned.
  • Band and Orchestra- I have spoken to the Directors at both Dartmouth and New Bedford Public Schools in an attempt to start what I would call an ensemble consortium.  This group of teachers could meet monthly with the focus on collaboration and growth of programs.  We can all learn from each other..
  • On Wednesday, I will be visiting K-5 art and music classes conducting a learning walk.  I will report back to you on Friday in the Arts Wrap up as to the great work we are doing across the district.  I will be visiting every K-5 art/music room throughout the day with a focus on the level of rigor in the planned task.  I will relay back to you my discoveries across the district so you have a complete picture of what OUR KIDS are creating and performing!

  • At the Gardner Museum: "Beyond Words" In this exhibition, we will visit the studies of scholars, princely libraries, places of worship, and printing presses of Renaissance Italy to explore how the ancestor of the modern book was perfected around 1500, thanks to innovations of the previous century. These developments arose from the efforts of Italian humanists, scholars who found inspiration in ancient Rome to create a new book for a brighter future. Whether you prefer a Penguin paperback or a Kindle, you are indebted to their inventions.

  • PPAC: Check out "Once"... Winner of eight 2012 Tony Awards® including BEST MUSICAL, ONCE is a truly original Broadway experience. Featuring an impressive ensemble of actor/musicians who play their own instruments onstage, ONCE tells the enchanting tale of a Dublin street musician who's about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. As the chemistry between them grows, his music soars to powerful new heights... but their unlikely connection turns out to be deeper and more complex than your everyday romance. Emotionally captivating and theatrically breathtaking, ONCE draws you in from the very first note and never lets go. It's an unforgettable story about going for your dreams... not living in fear... and the power of music to connect all of us.

Have a wonderful weekend, and welcome back, Tom Brady!
