Weekly Arts Wrap Up- May 1, 2017

Welcome back, Fine and Performing Arts Family!

We have had a week filled with joy and celebration of the arts, but suffered the loss of a team member who was dear to us.  Mr. Eric Spencer was the Theater Teacher at Matthew J. Kuss Middle School, where he worked with many of our students who loved him dearly.  Students at Kuss met today with the Kuss team to hear the news and also be able to share some time to discuss and console each other.  Here at Durfee, the performing arts team met with students to do the same, as so many of the Durfee students were also students of Eric.  Mr. Spencer will be missed, but remembered for all of the passion for the craft that he handed down to his students.  We mourn his loss, and keep his memory in our hearts.

Last Thursday, we held the 2nd Annual FRPS K-12 Arts Expo at BMC Durfee High School.  Thanks go out to all who helped make this show such a celebration.  It sure does take a village!  Here are some pictures that capture the energy of the event...

In reflection, it's my goal to have all students represented who we serve in the arts, and as we grow and learn to make this Expo the best it can be, let's ensure that all students in art have a piece on display- after all, this is one of our most important standards! (4.12- Choose and prepare artwork for exhibition, and be able to discuss their choices, 4.8- Create and prepare artwork for group or individual public exhibitions, and 4.2- Select works for exhibition and work as a group to create a display).  All work will be delivered to your schools this week.

On the Horizon:
  • Junior SEMSBA- 5/5 and 5/6
  • District Solo Festival- Monday, May 8th 3:45PM
  • Durfee Spring Concert- 5/11 6:30 PM
  • Durfee Music Student Trip- 5/12- 13
  • Durfee Festival of the Arts- Friday, 5/19* (pending)
  • Link Up Program with the RI Phil- 5th Grade District Field Trip- 5/24
On the Calendar for Collaboration:

Evaluation Nuts and Bolts:
  • One year plans: The deadline for summative conferences is 5/26.  You should be preparing your artifacts for submission one week prior to the date that you meet with your evaluator.  Make sure you include the outcome of your SLG work, and that it is easy to understand- report your findings and have a conclusion as to what the impact of this work was on student learning.  At the summative, you need 3-5 artifacts per standard as well as for the SLG and PPG.
  • Two year plans: Same as above, but if you are in formative period, you should have 1-3 artifacts for each standard, as well as the SLG and PPG.  If at summative (end of 2nd year), you should have 3-5.
  • If you work at Durfee or are an itinerant teacher, I will be inviting you to these meetings this week via the calendar.  If I am a secondary evaluator (K-8 teachers who I do not own directly), feel free to have me at these meetings with your building evaluator.
Have a wonderful week!

Jackie
