Friday ARTS WRAP UP 10/11/16

I Am Inspired By: the "arts"work celebrated in this news report.. Watch the short clip and you will understand why!    http://www.wkyt.com/content/news?article=396967961

This teacher maps out her plans each month tied to an artistic era.  Her tasks engage students to look, think, feel and make.. Synthesis.  Whether under the tables painting like a renaissance painter or outside painting in the impressionistic style, in her planning she DARES to be different, and asks students to "embody" art and art making.  These tasks embody the arts, they challenge students to think as an artist would "in that moment."  It gets us to the "why" behind artists' purposes.

Ponder on these questions as you plan your tasks..

  • Why do musicians compose?  Why do artists sculpt, build, draw or paint?
  • How does the choice of instrument, tempo, and rhythm help "accurately" tell a story?
  • Do students know how to tell their own stories through music or art?
  • Do we plan tasks that reach "synthesis" of style?
  • When you plan a lesson, have you ever started with the goal of synthesis in mind?
Collaboration and Growth:
  • Thank you all so much for reading the Learning Walk report I shared.  It is a huge and energizing learning experience for me as I travel across the district to your schools, and I want this learning to be shared vertically and across all grades so that all K-12 Fine and Performing Arts teachers are aware of what colleagues are working on with students and what our foci should be moving forward for growth in our continuously emerging professional practices.
  • The Grade 6-12 Learning Walk will be on Wednesday, October 19th from 8-2:30.  See you then!
  • Durfee Teachers will have their monthly department meeting on Wednesday, October 19th- we will be digging into the Ed Plan Development.  We will backwards design these so that you can plan when you will assess growth and with what tools.
Planning Ahead:
  • Professional Development Day: Tuesday, November 8th.  Please, have your self assessment done in the text, Never Work Harder Than Your Students by that day, if you could.  This can be found on pages 1-22.  Good stuff!  We will begin with that information as a whole group on the PD day, and then break out into teams to continue to learn and collaborate together. The plan will be sent to you next week in an email to you and your building leaders.  My preliminary plan is to have you together in the AM, and then have you return to schools at the break for lunch (11AM). As always, if you need to remain at your school, please let me know!
  • 'Tis the Season: It's that time of year..  Scholastic Art and Writing!  Senior District Auditions!  Here are the links to the information you need:
