Barbara Mullen's Sculpture Students design characters inspired by stop motion art form
This week, I wanted to revisit our friend, Daniel Pink for inspiration, and for the first time this year, I will ask you to post at the bottom of this blog! Watch this 5 minute video on three key factors of motivation, and RESPOND to this question BY CLICKING ON THE PENCIL ICON AT THE END OF THIS BLOG POST!
- Daniel Pink identifies three factors in motivation- Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose. How do you foster these during your classroom tasks?

- Don't forget to blog back your response!
In the Arts this week...
Heather Pereira at Doran celebrates Artistry!
This week in the Arts:
- In Common Planning Time, across the district middle schools:
- We planned collaboratively and mapped out learning at Morton
- We discussed the use of Classroom Dojo as a behavioral support system for sub-separate classes at Kuss
- We discussed ways to use X2 more efficiently, and began a Blendspace on ELL strategies at Talbot
- The Band Aids Parent Group met on Tuesday night at Durfee's Tradewinds- we discussed fundraisers for the big 2017 trip. One of these is a Polar Express Night, to be held here at Durfee on Friday, December 16th. I will attach the flyer in an email to teachers at K-5 schools soon so that K-5 music teachers can help us promote this fun evening for the community children- they can watch the movie, have a little milk and cookies, and might even have a special guest visit them!
- The Durfee Band attended the NESBA Competition.. Their performances earned our musicians two silvers and a gold! Here's a video of their awesome work! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N82bJKWp53E
- I began unannounced observations this week focused on our work this year- planning tasks that allow students to dig deep into rigorous art and music content, creating, problem solving, performing, and communicating via their art form (I A 3- Rigorous Standards Based Unit Design). My goal is to be in at least 4 schools a week (other than my weekly visits) for the specific task of individual teacher feedback. I will be in for approximately 10 minutes, take notes, pictures of work, and then send you the feedback via email within 48 hours. If you would like to talk about the feedback, feel free to shoot me a time and I will visit! Thank you!
- Sunday, November 6th, from 1 to 5PM... Our Big Fundraiser for Durfee's Music Program!! The Michael Troy Memorial Concert!

Barron and Mattei's submission to the Blog,
ReplyDeleteMattei - My eighth grade students are assigned 1-3 lessons at a time and they have a choice as to which art lesson they would like to complete first. All three are to be completed within a specific time period and have the ability for students to select their own mixed media options. This type of task choice has been enjoyable (engagement) for the students in the past. The students will be given a pARTners in Art time during the work period to discuss what is working well and what is challenging. Students share out at the end of class. This allows the students working on various other choices to get a heads-up on what to expect or think about in relation to their medium and subject matter (develop mastery). In class, we have discussions on how the work they will be completing is relevant to their world and the world around them (Purpose).
Barron - In Digital Art 8th grade students are given a design brief that breaks down what the current project is, but leaves the methods open as to which program they could use in order to complete their project. Students then work independently with the program of their choice, this independent work has helped to allow the student more flexibility and creativity in the class while at the same time keeping with the curriculum at large.
P.S. We couldn't find the pencil so we responded together in the comments. :)
I have seen this video before, Daniel Pink rules.
ReplyDeleteI have tried to foster autonomy by allowing students to help me choose some pieces that they would want to perform. Among elementary students I try to find songs that they know (popular songs) to learn alongside the book material. I feel that this helps them to feel they "own" a song more so than something in the book that they think they just have to play rather than want to play. I also let students pick the note(s) they want to use for rhythm study warmups. Sometimes in class they can pick songs in the book that I might skip too. They feel like they have some choice rather than just being told to play the same songs over and over again.
I also feel that intrinsic rewards are WAY more effective than material rewards when it comes to music. If I have to constantly bribe my students with prizes, then I am really not sure if they are playing because they love it or because there is a reward. Having said that, I love to reward students when they did the right thing (showing up to a performance for example) and they don't even expect anything in return. Truly the best reward!
