Topic:  Line set drawing and building a flat: Essential Understandings

Students will :

• Construct a “ boxed flat - 4’ x 8’ scale model 1”=1
• Construct and understand the uses of Flats and Ground Rows

4.3 Recognize and understand the roles and responsibilities of various technical personnel in creating and producing a theatrical performance

4.6 Draw renderings, floor plans, and/or build models of sets for a dramatic work and explain choices in using visual elements (line, shape/form, texture, color, space), and visual principles (unity, variety, harmony, balance, rhythm)

9.   Describe characteristics of theatre technology and equipment based on a  tour of a high school or professional theatre
9. 5. 11 Use a variety of assessment tools such as journals, rehearsal notes, video/audio tapes, rubrics, self, peer, and teacher evaluations to revise and refine their own or the group’s work

Scenic Flats. (creating a model flat )

Flat Facts

Flats, short for Scenery Flats, are flat pieces of theatrical scenery which are painted and positioned on stage so as to give the appearance of buildings or other background.

Flats can be soft or hard covered. Soft-covered flats (covered with canvas or muslin) have changed little from their origin in the Italian Renaissance.

Soft-covered flats are usually covered with muslin.

Hard-covered flats with a frame that is perpendicular to the paint surface are referred to as studio, TV, or Hollywood flats.

Hard-covered flats are usually covered with Luan.

Flats with a frame that places the width of the lumber parallel to the face are called Boxed, New York or Broadway flats.

Usually flats are built in standard sizes of 4 wide x 8, 10, or 12 feet tall so that walls or other scenery may easily be constructed, and so that flats may be stored and reused for subsequent productions.

Often affixed to battens flown in from the fly tower or loft for the scenes in which they are used.

Flats may also be stored at the sides of the stage, called wings, and braced to the floor when in use for an entire performance.

Creating a working scaled drawing of a 4x8’ boxed flat

• What is a scaled drawing ?

• Draw a template in a 1” scale  of the components of the assigned scenery on graph paper and agree on the standard dimensions.
• Trace and cut out you flats using the templates you created.
• Assemble your free standing flats.

Work Period

• Collaborative engagement  in developing a template for a model flat.
• Reading and following directions as they work on their project as a group or team.
• Constructing a study guide ie:terms procedure and the componants of a flat and a line set drawing.

Assessments

• Projects “ Line set drawing and scale model of a flat.
• Summative written assessment.

Closing  

• Write terms ( terms of the day )  in blue notebook:
• Disussion : What are we doing? Why must we understand scenic settings , positions and the environment?

Home work

• Make-up  OA and worksheets Google classroom

Modifications

• Highlighting steps.
• Reviewing Rubric daily
• More “one on one” attention.
• Extended deadline.
• Study guide and O.A for those absent

Materials/Resources :

• In – Focus Projector, pencils, paper, rulers  blue book. production pictures, cell phone calendars.digital camera, Stage and Shop areas, scripts

What I notice in both of these lessons is the depth of content specific vocabulary, and how students are being presented with a task that is rigorous and has an aspect of problem solving using the arts standards.

In the News This Week:

• WE made it through MARCH! Yay!
• Up next- All City Band and Orchestra! This will be held here at Durfee on Tuesday (band) and Thursday (orchestra), April 4th and 6th at 6:30 PM- over 125 students are participating in this event each night! Come on down and celebrate our students' ability to practice and perform!
• End of Term 3 is Friday the 7th!
• The K-12 Arts Expo is coming! Please give your art teacher colleagues a huge high 5 this month as they prepare student work for the Arts Expo, held here at Durfee on Thursday, April 27th from 5 to 7PM. Art teachers, please let me know if you need additional supplies or invites!

Collaboration, Arts EXPO and Growth:

• Heather Pereira will report back to colleagues during the May departmental meeting as she travels today to the DESE's Art Education Conference. We are keeping in tune with the state's discussions around teaching the arts! Topics- The Teacher as Artist, and Expert Artist, Expert Learner.
• The April K-8 Department Meetings will be as follows:
• K-5 Music- Thursday, April 27th at Letourneau- 3:45 to 4:45.
• 6-8 Music- Thursday, April 27th at Morton- 3:45 to 4:45.
• K-8 Art- Your "department meeting" time will also be Thursday, April 27th at Durfee- come after your dismissal time to set up for the arts Expo! Reminder- if you would like to have your artwork brought to Durfee, have it prepared (and rolled up with tape securing it) and email me prior to Thursday the 13th so I can arrange for transportation. This way, couriers can do this during spring break week. I will have the bi-fold boards set up and labeled by school by the end of the day on Monday the 24th.
• The Durfee Fine and Performing Arts Team has their faculty meeting on Tuesday, April 11th, and their department meeting on Wednesday the 26th- Music should use this time to prep for the Spring Concert and Art should use the time to hang student work in the Durfee area for the Arts Expo.
• Our own Mary Zema will be presenting to the Special Education Parent Advisory Council on Tuesday May 2nd, sharing some of the activities she has done in music class. She has been working with Pre-k -8 ASD classes and would like to share some strategies that parents may wish to do at home with their child. She will also share some research on a music program called REI which has had proven success in helping children with ASD experience less anxiety and do better with transitions.  You rock, Mary!
