Welcome to the last week of September, 2019!
In The News This Week:
  • I would like to share that we were informed yesterday that FRPS Fine and Performing Arts was awarded a $17,000.00 grant to purchase string instruments for our kids!  This is amazing news!  Thank you to the Klarman Family Foundation!
  • K-5 Art and Music Teachers met for their monthly department meeting- great collaboration talk around goal setting for the SLG and PPG, as well as planning for the months ahead- music will be focusing on the development and implementation of a common recorder program as we develop our own!
  • 6-8 Art and Music Teachers also met for their monthly department meeting, and they also shared out ideas for the PPG, based on the work that lies ahead for all.  Common threads included music tech, curriculum mapping using NCAS and new staff want to focus on effective strategies for the arts classroom.
  • Maine College of Art was in to visit the Durfee AP students, and so was Sofia Botelho, artistic director of FABRIC Arts Festival.  Please do get out this weekend and be PRESENT for the ARTS- right here in Fall River!
  • Need to know the DEETS for FABRIC?  Here they are:
    • The Site: Fabric Fall River
    • Fabric Arts Festival is a celebration of art, music, community and the city, that takes place in Fall River, Massachusetts.
The first edition will take place on September 25-28, 2019.  Fabric Arts Festival merges Fall River’s past and present narratives and showcases them across the city’s urban structures and dynamics. As it strives to preserve tradition by crossing it with new artistic forms, the festival will draw from the city’s rich cultural and geographic contexts to establish a synergistic dialogue with its territory and local communities, extending an invitation to direct participation to the city’s population and its visitors.
Fabric Arts Festival proposes to engage the city through a unique and multidisciplinary experience, with an arts circuit stretching over a central area of the city with music concerts, site-specific projects and murals.
Weekly Arts Teacher Hack:
  • I would like to share a weekly "teacher hack" with the team here in the blog!  This means I WILL be hitting you up for your mad teacher skills...  Here's one from me!
  • Have you ever planned a task that has kids "close reading" a painting, short comp, or other work, and wanted to have a quick way to self assess?  Simply use a sheet protector with the criteria/rubric in it and an expo marker- have the students use this to rate themselves- either midway through the task or at completion..  Then wipe it away w/felt and reuse!
