Comin' In HOT:

THE BIG BIG EXPO:

  • We have some HEAVY PLANNIN' and PREPPIN' coming up in the ART Department with the EXPO on the horizon...  Art Teachers will be using CPT, PD time to prepare student art work for the Expo, held on April 30th at Fall River Government Center.
  • Teachers have labels, and the kraft paper to begin the work, and our goal is to get as close to 100% of students in arts classes represented at this event!
  • In CPT, we have discussed ways for teachers to plan out how they will be doing this work, and for the next cycle of weeks, we will continue to focus on this.
THE ZEITERION TRIP FOR GRADE 3:
  • We have Watson, Tansey, Doran, Silvia and Letourneau schools attending the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra as they participate in TRACKING RHYTHMS: SHARED RHYTHMS IN CLASSICAL MUSIC AND ANIMAL GAIT PATTERNS.  This is a cross-curricular exploration of similarities of rhythm and patterns in life and in music.  The NBSO has visited each school and performed for these students, so this field trip is really a culmination of the learning process!
THE NUMBER OUR STARS TRIP for 6-8:
  • Students from all 5 middle schools have been invited to attend a performance of Number Our Stars.  This will give students a real life experience with theater, especially for those who are currently engaged in theater in some way at their schools.  150 students will be attending this performance at the Zeiterion on March 25th!
DURFEE FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS TEAM:
  • ART STUDENTS HIT BOSTON/HARVARD ART MUSUEM: Our advanced art students will be visiting on Thursday- Check it out: https://www.harvardartmuseums.org/collections?
  • Drama students have been working so hard with Lara Beth Terry and Gary Bigelow on their Midsummer Night's Dream performance.. the set looks amazing- can't wait to see how they do at METG's!  Break a Leg!  They will compete in prelims this weekend- SATURDAY IS A BIG LONG DAY FOR OUR TEAM!!  Wish them luck!
  • Color Guard/Percussion have a few performance dates on the horizon as they start their first season as an indoor percussion ensemble!  So scary and exciting at the same time!  Thank you, Alex Ollivierre and team!
WHEW!  That's A LOT!

On the PD Calendar:
  • Release Time Day, 3/9: Please look for the offerings in TeachPoint and enroll as you normally would.  I will be adding these "courses" for you.
  • Release Time Day, 4/6: Teacher led.  I am sure teachers will be working on prep for expo and performances, or other curriculum based topics.
End of TERM AND TRIMESTER INFO:
  • End of Term 3- Friday, April 3rd.
  • End of Trimester 2- Friday, March 13th.
Monthly Department Meeting Planning:
  • I did not hold a February meeting, and will not hold a March or April meeting because teachers will be using this meeting time to either work with building based teams at their meetings or be prepping for the expo/spring performances.  We will resume in May.
SUPER DUPER COOL TEACHER STUFF:
Check out these examples of some really cool stuff happening in our classrooms.. here are some sample plan summaries from lessons shared:

  • Honors Art 1- DHS: Students are starting a new unit on portrature.  I’m going to begin the unit with a presentation and  some mini lessons on drawing facial features and then looking at the planes of the face and general incriments of measure. Students will be working with traditional sanguine and sepia colored pastel on toned paper. VA: RE 7.2 7.1, CR: 2.2, 1.1 CN: 10.1, 11.1
  • Art Foundations at RPA: Students explore self-expression through creating self-portraits using collage. Students develop their artworks by taking a self-portrait photography using their cellphones, then transferring it as a contour drawing onto paper. Students consider the effect of typography, texture, and color on their representation and composition. Communication skills will be practiced through group discussion about self-image, the artistic process, and artwork during a final critique.
  • Intro to Percussion, DHS: Technical accuracy and Theoretical understanding, RH and LH isolation exercises for technique. Review Whole, Half, Quarter, Eighth notes and rhythms with quarter rests. Review  “Buzz” (Multiple Bounce Stroke) “Accent” “Flam” Add “Flam Taps” Vocab: Flam Tap, Accents, One-Measure Repeat Sign, Fermata, Pick-up Note (Anacrusis), Repeat Sign, (Term also used in Poetry), Solo/Soli & Tutti.

Active and appropriate student participation.  Whole Group Instruction: QUAVER LESSON: MELODY & MELODIC DIRECTION (1LP16 / 17) Students will engage with Quaver’s lesson on melody and melodic direction. Active student participation.
Whole Group Instruction: SINGING WITH DIRECTION Students will sing a variety of songs that will allow them to utilize melodic direction with their voice.  Active student participation, showing melodic direction by singing with inflexion, up and down.

When I look at lesson plans, and see the work in action and the OUTPUT IN STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND STUDENT WORK, IT BOILS DOWN TO THIS...

SOLID PLANNING EQUATIONSolid planning + scaffolded supports + check in points + individual feedback = SOLID STUDENT WORK..
