K-8 Virtual Meeting Monday, November 1

K-8 Teachers will be having their monthly department meeting on Monday November 1.  In summary, teachers have two hour long after school meetings- one is a building based hour and the other is supposed to be departmental.  Pre-COVID, we did these at Silvia (remember?), but it was always hard to get you with your colleagues due to different end times.  So, we are going to do these virtually.  They will start at 4 and end by 5.  Please let me know if you have any questions!  You should have the Google Meet invite in your Google Calendars.

K-8 PD Day- Tuesday, November 2

Art: K-8 Art Teachers who are in the Mapping cohort will meet with Rochelle Pettenati at Doran Community School in her art room from 12:45PM to 3:00. Please bring your laptop/chromebook. You will be continuing to work on revising the map, adding tech, hyperlinks, texts, I can statements, and other resources to the shared map.

Music: K-8 Music Teachers who are in the Mapping cohort will meet with Abby Casey at Talbot Middle School in her music room from 12:45PM to 3:00PM. Please bring your laptop/chromebook. You will be continuing to work on revising the map, adding tech, hyperlinks, texts, I can statements, and other resources to the shared map.

Band/Orchestra: K-8 Band and Orchestra Teachers will meet with Nicole Turgeon at Durfee High School in the music office from 8:00AM to 3:00PM. Please bring your laptop/chromebook. You will be continuing to work on preparing for concerts, mapping common performance expectations and the instrument orders.

*Literacy Cohort: You will be working in your classrooms, and starting and ending with me from 12:30-3PM via Google Meet.

Concert Prep Info:

Here we are! It’s concert/performance prep season, and I want to support you in this work so that we are ready to ROCK and ROLL!
As you prepare, here are some clear guidelines:

● Inform students and parents prior to the event that this is a school sponsored event, and that masks must be worn in all areas of the school during the event..
● If you are offering concessions, guests must partake of food and drink outside of the auditorium, but use signage and verbal cues to remind guests of masking expectations in the auditorium and waiting areas (when not eating/drinking).
● Please do not use paper tickets or collect donations/admission at the door.
● Families can sit together, while keeping a “halo” of open seats around them. You may want to consider roping off every other row (or if using folding chairs, spread rows), or allow guests to separate themselves.
● Please do not use paper programs. Create a program for the event as usual (use Google Docs), and use a QR code (posted in multiple locations) for families to access the program. If you need help with this, please reach out to me or your tech facilitator in the building.
● Please request masks from your main office to hand out at the door to guests who arrive without them, but PLEASE communicate in your letters home that this will be expected at the event to try to lessen the amount of masks given.

An IDEA: Since you have a “captive audience” who will be using their phone to access the program, it might be a good time to have an additional QR code there with access to your website or mode of communication! Maybe it’s just a QR code to an email request doc so you can keep your viewers in the loop for the next show!

City of Fall River to Receive $2 Million Grant for Substance Abuse Prevention

(FALL RIVER, MA- September 10, 2021)- Mayor Paul Coogan, in partnership with Viva Fall River, has announced the You(th) Matter Art Contest. All students in grades K-12 who live or attend school in Fall River are eligible to enter a submission. The contest is inspired by work being done by the Fall River Public Schools, the Youth Violence Prevention Coalition and the Fall River Suicide Prevention Task Force to address mental health and values of self-esteem through the “You Matter Project” and the national “#WhyYouMatter” campaign.

Students must enter a piece of art that answers the question: "What matters to you?". Any medium is accepted- drawings, paintings, photography, even poetry. S Submissions will be judged based on creativity, clarity and content. The top 3 winners will be chosen from three categories- Elementary, Middle and High School. Amazon gift cards will be given as prizes for the 1st ($100), 2nd ($75) and 3rd ($50) place winners of each age category.

Entries are due by Tuesday, November 9th and can be submitted by email to mayor@fallriverma.org or by using the drop box at Fall River City Hall. Submissions must include the student's name, grade and school as well as a name, phone number and email address for a parent/guardian.
