NESBA Finals- Durfee Marching Band KILLING IT!!!!  Thank you, Julia Klingner and Jay Treloar for endless weekends with these kids- they have grown so much.

Stephanie Stroud, local fiber artist visited Ms. Pereira's students at Durfee this week to teach them how to create pieces using the felting technique... so cool!

In the News This Week:
  • PD Day Shout Out
  • Monthly Department Meetings- K-8
  • Term 2 Starts Monday
  • Youth Matter Art Contest
  • Why You Matter Photo Shoot at Stone, Next Steps
PD Day was GREAT!
Thank you to all- the professional development day was so good- Abby and Rochelle worked with K-8 music and art teams to work on the maps.. such great work is happening in these cohorts.  I really appreciate the thought and alignment that is happening across schools.  By the end of the year, we should have a working art and music map that you will be able to access for grade level expectations, I Can statements, sample lessons, resources, links, etc.  So cool.  Thank you to your Lead Teachers, Abby Casey and Rochelle Pettenati for leading this work.
My Literacy cohort worked on some really cool tasks that they planned around two specific books- one from the 5th grade map and the other from the 6th.. here is what they did:

Today we will:

  • Ground the task planning in a shared ownership for student literacy

  • Use the Core ELA texts to inspire task planning

  • Plan an art or music lesson using a selected text

  • Reinforce 3 vocabulary words from ELA in art or music class

Example: 5th Grade Text- A Window Into History: The Mystery of the Cellar Window

  • Take some time to look at this text (online).  Look at the Wonders Scope and Sequence- what is the Essential Question and how can we support this in Music or Art?

  • Look at the specific vocabulary- what three words could you reinforce in your classroom? Examples- Astounded, Inquisitive, and Suspicious...

  • How would you do this?

  • Brainstorm a task to plan derived from this text.

Example: 6th Grade Text- Flesh and Blood So Cheap

  • Take some time to look at this text (online).  What is the Essential Question and how can we support this in Music or Art?

  • Look at the specific vocabulary- what three words could you

  • reinforce in your classroom? Examples- tribute, memorial, legacy.

  • How would you do this?

  • Brainstorm a task to plan derived from this text.

So good- we had so many great lesson plans started from this work, and I cannot WAIT to see what the kids do when we unleash this work in February (when the kids are reading the texts)!!

Monthly Department Meet Ups:
The November Monthly Department meeting for K-8 teams are held on the first Monday of each month from 4-5PM on Google Meet.  As some schools use the two contracted hours per month, I understand that all may not be in attendance, but please, try to communicate with your principal to see if you can do the one hour faculty meeting with your building, and come to our one hour monthly pow wow- you will have a chance to chat with your colleagues on lesson ideas, strategies and other planning tid-bits.  These are facilitated by Abby and Rochelle virtually, as we have several dismissal times, so the only way to have everyone available is to run it this way.

Term 2 Starts MONDAY, Oh My!
Yes, I cannot believe it, but today marks the one quarter mark for the school year.  Durfee Teachers, please make sure that if you have new term 2 classes, you check to make sure your student numbers are not over what you have for seats in your classrooms.  Please let me know if there are any issues, and take a look at new student rosters, IEPs, ELLs so that we are ready to rock and roll!

Youth Matter Art Contest!
The deadline is next week!  Please make sure we are sending some student work in- I would hate to hear that we have a low turn out when the city is engaging our kids and providing prizes!!!  Let me know if you have questions, but basically either email the submissions to the city (see flyer) or send to me and I will bring the actual art over to City Hall.  Due Tuesday, November 9th!
