Happy Rosh Hashanah!
In the News This Week:
Welcome to another Friday, team. Your work in planning great tasks for all students is great to see, both in the lesson plans shared as well as in person! I will be getting into several buildings on Monday and Tuesday of next week to check in, and hope to have visited every classroom by the end of the day Tuesday.
I will be doing learning walks for our department this year, as I have done in the past. These will start Tuesday, October 11th, and I will attempt to see every classroom by Wednesday the 12th with the goal of creating a baseline report of tasks and scaffolds for the entire department. Once the report is complete I will share it with all of you, so that you can see what your colleagues are planning, and be able to "steal" ideas and scaffolds from it. The purpose of this LW is not to give individual feedback, but to collect data for the entire group, share commendable things happening, and recognize what work we need to plan for as a group.
This is scaffolding. When we think of scaffolds in a classroom, it's always good to think about some key components of a scaffold:
- It is temporary
- It is not provided to every one, only those who need it
- It builds stamina or strength or skill
- It can go from external motivator, to intrinsic motivation
- It allows for all students to be able to access grade level or high quality content
So, the key questions to reflect on when planning for scaffolds are:
- How do I know who will need it?
- What will I do/provide as a scaffold?
- How do I give it to the students (hand out/on tables/in GC...)?
Some examples of scaffolds include:
- Infographic
- Manipulatives
- Procedural steps (typed to be used as a checklist)
- Repetition of specific content vocabulary (this is good for all, but can be beneficial for kids who need repetition to retain)
- Small group pulled for reinforcement (after demo, sit with 4-6 students who need modeling)
- Mini tutorial videos (we have done really well with these in the past)
As we Fall into October (see what I did there), let's continue to plan these tasks that engage our students in great opportunities to act, sing, play, perform, build, draw, paint, cut, sew and TALK about their thinking!
Here is a link to an EDITABLE ACCOUNTABLE TALK POSTER. Check it out!
