Busy. Busy. Week.

Whew!  Now that March is in our rear view window, it's time to celebrate the great.  What was so GREAT about March?

  •  Abby Casey taught a music PD at the MMEA Conference!
  • We had an art and a music guest artist at SCCAL at the Narrows- a water-colorist and a percussionist!
  • We received the news that Ismael Alves was awarded a Scholastic Gold Key at the NATIONAL level- kudos to Ismael AND Heather Pereira!
  • Fashion students had Jae Lavoie visit via Google Meet from NYC to start a collab project with Durfee students!
  • We continue to have a rockin' early college program with several students learning design techniques from the dream team (Ana Arsenio and UMASS D's Aleta Deyo)!
  • Lynch Leadership Fellows visited both Silvia and Durfee's art and music classrooms and then sat with me to talk about program design and development!
  • The "Portuguese Kids" AKA students from Oporto, Portugal came to visit at Durfee and took part in special classes with Ana Arsenio, Abby Casey and Jayson Newell!
  • All City Orchestra and Band had almost 300 students combined on stage performing for a full house!  Amazing to see these programs grow!  We are back, baby!
  • And we wrapped up the term 3 learning walk.  So awesome to see you all in action!  I missed a few of you due to absences, but I promise to catch you on the next one!

In the News for April:
  • Term 4
  • Expo Prep
  • Durfee/UMD Side by Side Concert
  • Solo Fest Prep
Term 4: Term 4 begins Monday April 3rd- this means we are in the final stretch of the year, people!  It's been a solid year, so let's wrap it up with a full tank of gas.  That means, get out there, recharge your batteries this weekend (and next as it's a 3-day weekend) and be ready for that final push.  Did I mention there's no school next Friday? :)

EXPO Prep: As you may know, the EXPO for the first time will be held in May!  On Thursday, May 18th, we will hold the Annual K-12 Arts Expo in the atrium of Durfee High School.  This year we have some AMAZING surprises, including a fashion show, and an "artshop" where you will be able to buy goods made right here.  So excited about this.. More to come!  Anyhoo- K-8 Art Teachers- I will send you the rolls of Kraft Paper during the first week of April.  You should already have labels, but if you run out, let me know.  Durfee art team, you will have the same space as last year, and we will divide up the white mesh panels and platforms, and also have the two glass partitions open that night, so we can use that space as well for display.

Durfee/UMASS Side by Side Concert: Julia Klingner will be collaboratively hosting this new event (at UMASS Dartmouth) on April 25th.  This collaborative concert involves our students performing a piece that is college level with college students and also playing a piece as the Durfee Band.  Our students in ensembles have been working so hard this year to learn challenging pieces, and after seeing them perform this week, I have NO DOUBT that they will do amazing.  I will attach the PDF flyer to this email.

Solo Fest Prep: Band and Orchestra students will be participating in Solo Fest again this year, held at Durfee High School in the Performing Arts Wing on May 9th, starting at 3:30 PM.  Students will be busy practicing for this adjudication "in house festival" all month!  If you know or have any of our band or orchestra students, please wish them luck (and remind them to practice)!  For those who don't know what this is, it's a FRPS festival where kids perform solo in front of a judge who evaluates them according to a performance rubric, and then gives them feedback and an award.  It's always a great time and a solid memory maker!

I hope you have enjoyed the March Masters daily insert- I felt like I was learning more about new artists and different culture's art and music.  It was a great way to start the day- kind of a fun take on "A Word a Day" but for the Arts!

Have a great weekend!
-Jackie
